A totally unexpected surprise! Heading south alone out of Palm Springs into the town of Mecca I uncovered a wonderful adventure in the Mecca Hills Recreation Area of the BLM. Mecca is a small town and the road to Painted Canyons was even smaller with sandy gravel. But, the bumpy road did end at a secluded gravel parking "lot." The canyon set before me inviting me into its depths. Towering walls with shadows, sun and lots of wildflowers. This canyon is part of the famous San Andreas Fault line south of Joshua Tree National Park. Plan to visit Painted Canyons during the spring or winter time only. It can get quite hot in June through October. Bring water, food, a hat and lots of film for your adventure. PS- 4 wheel drive or trucks are recommended on the 4 mile gravel road. PSS- your cellphone will NOT work here, so plan accordingly! See some beautiful photos on this link here: http://picasaweb.google.com/2stews1948/PaintedCanyons
